Painting to Vivaldi with Darby Milbrath: Musik in Motion

Our Musik in Motion series features artists interpreting baroque music: an essential part of Tafelmusik’s repertoire. In this inaugural video, we feature painter Darby Milbrath, as she completes a painting—while listening to a Tafelmusik recording of Antonio Vivaldi. Darby Milbrath is a Toronto-based visual artist, whose paintings are informed by her background as a professional contemporary dancer. Milbrath often paints to music—including baroque and classical music, and the sounds of violins, strings, and piano—and is featured here, creating a new oil painting while listening to Tafelmusik’s recording of Antonio Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto in C Minor, RV 761 “Amato bene”, from our album Vivaldi con amore.

Musik in Motion is a way to reach beyond our own practice, to highlight how Canadian artists from other disciplines are inspired by this music in their work today. Musik in Motion videos will premiere once a month, and forthcoming collaborations feature visual artist Alex McLeod, Tafelmusik cellist Keiran Campbell, and the School of Toronto Dance Theatre with choreographer Hanna Kiel. Watch the first video now, and subscribe to Tafelmusik here on YouTube to receive notifications of video premieres and learn more about the featured artists.
