The charming canals and warm lights of this city envelop my soul like a blanket. I have never been to a place that made me feel so immediately at home. Even the darkest, rainiest days are beautiful here.

Julia Wedman's Grand Tour: Journal Entry 2 - October 21, 2010

It’s my last day of a magical three weeks spent traipsing all over Germany. I am sitting on a train from Berlin to Salzburg. The sky is an incredible mix of dark grey clouds interspersed with crisp cool blue. The trees are covered in leaves of delicate yet magnificent golds, oranges and burnt reds. I almost wish the train wasn’t going so fast so I could spend more time looking at each luminescent scene that passes by my window.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, sons of English noblemen would undertake a “Grand Tour” of Europe as a kind of “life education,” or a rite of passage into adulthood. They travelled from England to France, Italy and other countries on the continent to learn about contemporary and ancient art, architecture and music, to learn new languages, explore new cultures and make new connections with people.
