Allen Whear joined Tafelmusik in 2000. He was Artistic Director of Baltimore’s Pro Musica Rara, and Principal Cellist, Recital Director, and Programme Annotator for the Carmel Bach Festival in California. He performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Classical Symphony, the Brandenburg Collegium and the Charleston Symphony. He appeared with Musica Antiqua Köln, the Vienna Boys Choir, the Smithsonian Chamber Players, and Aradia. His composition Short Story was commissioned and premiered by Tafelmusik in 2006. He taught baroque cello and viola da gamba at the University of North Texas College of Music and has given master classes at conservatories and universities throughout Canada and the US. A graduate of the New England Conservatory, where he studied with Laurence Lesser, and the Juilliard School, where he studied with Claus Adam, he pursued historical playing with Anner Bijlsma in the Netherlands, and held a Doctorate from Rutgers University. His recording credits include Sony, Virgin, Musical Heritage, Naxos, and Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.
