July 10, 2013 … Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra’s touring engagements for the 2013-14 season begin with appearances at two Canadian festivals in the coming weeks: a pair of all-Bach concerts with mezzo soprano Laura Pudwell and soprano Shannon Mercer on August 17 and 18 at Stratford Summer Music at St. Andrew's Church, and the orchestra’s debut performance at the Quebec International Sacred Music Festival on September 13 at Saint-Roch Church, with baritone Tyler Duncan. Music Director Jeanne Lamon leads all three concerts.

The first Stratford performance on August 17th at 11:15 am features mezzo-soprano Laura Pudwell in arias from two Bach cantatas, Jesu, der aus großer Liebe from Cantata 165, and Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan from Cantata 75, as well as "Quoniam tu solus sanctus," from the Mass in F Major, BWV 233, and "Et exsultavit" from Magnificat, BWV 243. The Grammy Award-nominated singer is known for her stunning interpretations, and performances characterized by “power and wit” (Seattle Times). Pudwell has appeared with Tafelmusik frequently, most notably in January 2012, when she stepped in on short notice to perform the role of Lichas in Handel’s Hercules, and as a soloist in Mozart’s Requiem in February 2013. She joins Tafelmusik as a soloist in Handel’s Messiah and Sing-Along Messiah in December 2013. Instrumental highlights of the August 17 programme include Bach’s Orchestral Suite in B minor, featuring Montreal flutist Grégoire Jeay, and Bach’s F-Minor Harpsichord Concerto, featuring Tafelmusik’s Charlotte Nediger

On August 18th at 2:00 pm  soprano Shannon Mercer joins Tafelmusik for Bach’s rarely performed Italian cantata “Non sa che sia dolore” (BWV 209), and the popular wedding cantata “Weichet nur” (BWV 202). The Ottawa-born soprano has been recognized for her “bright and agile” soprano, and her use of “vibrato and ornamentation … to extract telling nuances from words and music” (Gramophone). Mercer recently appeared at the 2013 Luminato Festival with Tafelmusik and The Mark Morris Group in L’Allegro, Il Moderato, ed il Penseroso, a legendary dance work set to music by Handel. Tafelmusik oboist John Abberger will be featured in the Concerto for oboe d’amore, arranged from three cantata arias by Jeanne Lamon.

Tafelmusik’s September 13 at 7:30 pm concert at the Quebec International Sacred Music Festival includes two string concertos by Vivaldi and Bach’s Concerto for oboe d'amore. Baritone Tyler Duncan will be featured in Bach's lyrical cantata "Ich habe genug," BWV 82, and in arias from the St. John Passion and Cantata 57.  The British Columbia-born, New York-based singer is known for a voice that is “rich, clear, and resonant” (Le Monde). Duncan is a frequent Tafelmusik guest, and performed with the orchestra at Stratford Summer Music last summer.

The Stratford and Quebec concerts are part of Tafelmusik’s rigorous schedule of prestigious touring engagements. The orchestra spends an average of 7 to 12 weeks a year on the road with annual tours of Canada, the United States of America and Europe. In November 2013, Tafelmusik returns to Japan with its world-renowned multi-media program The Galileo Project, to be followed by a Tafelmusik International Baroque Academy residency at the Hanyang University, Seoul.
