Guest Artist Masterclasses

Tafelmusik’s series of public masterclasses for advanced students and professional players continues each season with classes in violin, viola, fortepiano, and voice. Vocalists and experienced players of period instruments will have the opportunity to work with our guest artists in public masterclasses and to see them in performance.
An application form for those interested in applying for a place in a masterclass can be found at the bottom of this page.

Entrance for auditors is free. Donations are much appreciated from those who are able to support this valuable artist training program. Suggested donation: $10 per class.

Participant fee: $50 (includes masterclass and concert ticket). Space in each class is limited— please apply early.
Tafelmusik may be able to assist in finding accommodation for out-of-town participants.

Thomas Hobbs is in demand with many leading baroque and early music ensembles. Recent concert performances include appearances with Collegium Vocale Gent, Ensemble Pygmalion, Academy of Ancient Music, Ex Cathedra, Le Concert Lorrain, Akademie für Alte Musick Berlin, De Nederladnse Bachvereniging, Australia Chamber Orchestra, Accademia Byzantina, and the Royal Scottish National, Birmingham, and Bournemouth Symphony orchestras. Hobbs’s operatic roles include Telemachus in Monteverdi The Return of Ulysses (English National Opera), and the title roles in Albert Herring and Ferrando Così fan tutte. A keen recitalist, highlights include performances of Vaughan Williams, Schubert, Schumann, Brett Dean, and Mozart. Thomas’ ever--‐expanding discography includes Bach B--‐Minor Mass, motets, cantatas, and Christmas Oratorio, Handel Chandos Anthems, Acis and Galatea and Esther, Mozart Requiem, and Beethoven Mass in C Major. Born in Exeter, Thomas Hobbs studied at the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music.

Dorothee Mields is one of the leading interpreters of 17th- and 18th-century music and is beloved by audiences and critics alike for her unique timbre and moving interpretations. Her flawless technique and the ethereal clarity of her voice also make her ideally suited for works by contemporary composers. She performs with Collegium Vocale Gent, Bach Collegium Japan, Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik, Netherlands Bach Society, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra, Lautten Compagney, and Klangforum Wien. A steadily growing discography with several award-winning recordings documents her artistic achievements. Recent releases include In darkness let me dwell and Love’s Alchymie with Hille Perl and Lee Santata; Purcell with Lautten Compagney; Telemann with L’Orfeo Barockorchestra, and Inspired by Song and Birds with flutist Stefan Timmingh. Dorothee teaches voice at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, Netherlands.

The brilliant violinist Elisa Citterio joins Tafelmusik as Music Director this season. She has moved to Toronto from her native Italy, where she divided her artistic life between orchestral work and an intense schedule as a chamber musician. She has recorded and toured, often as leader, with such ensembles as Dolce & Tempesta, Europa Galante, Accademia Bizantina, Accordone, Zefiro, la Venexiana, La Risonanza, Ensemble 415, Concerto Italiano, Orquestra del Monsalvat, Il Giardino Armonico, and Orchestra Academia 1750. From 2004, she was a member of the Orchestra del Teatro della Scala di Milano. Elisa studied violin and viola at the L. Marenzio Conservatory in her hometown of Brescia, graduating with the highest honours. Post--‐graduate work included baroque violin studies with Enrico Onofri, Luigi Mangiocavallo, and Chiara Banchini. Her discography includes more than 35 recordings of both orchestral and chamber music. From 2014–16, Elisa taught baroque violin alongside Stefano Montanari at the Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado in Milan.

Kristian Bezuidenhout is one of today’s most notable and exciting keyboard artists, equally at home on the fortepiano, harpsichord, and modern piano. Born in South Africa in 1979, he began his studies in Australia, completed them at the Eastman School of Music, and now lives in London. After initial training as a pianist, he explored early keyboards, continuo playing, and performance practice. Kristian first gained international recognition at the age of 21 after winning the prestigious first prize and audience prize in the Bruges Fortepiano Competition. Kristian is a regular guest with the world’s leading ensembles including the Freiburger Barockorchester, Les Arts Florissants, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Orchestre des Champs Elysées, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester; and has guest directed (from the keyboard) the English Concert, Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Tafelmusik, Collegium Vocale, Juilliard 415, Kammerakademie Potsdam, and Dunedin Consort. Kristian’s rich and award-winning discography on Harmonia Mundi includes the complete keyboard music of Mozart and Mendelssohn and Mozart Piano Concertos with the Freiburger Barockorchester. In the 2017/18 season, Kristian becomes an Artistic Director of the Freiburger Barockorchester and Principal Guest Conductor with the English Concert.
