Tafelmusik Nominated for 2016 Innovation Award by Berlin-based Classical:NEXT

February 4, 2016 … Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra has been nominated for the 2016 Innovation Award by the Berlin-based Classical:NEXT, an international professional forum for all sectors of the classical music industry. The award recognizes new trends, experiments, and forward-thinking approaches to classical music-making around the world. Tafelmusik and The Art of Time Ensemble are the only Canadian nominees on the longlist of 30.
The 2016 Innovation Award nominees were chosen by a committee of 19 journalists and industry experts from 17 countries worldwide, and the winner will be announced at a ceremony in Rotterdam in May, 2016.
"This award aims to give international recognition to the people who are doing the most to push things forward with daring yet intelligent, effective, and successful “out-of-the-box” thinking, planning, and action," says Jennifer Dautermann, director of Classical:NEXT.
Tafelmusik’s unique multidisciplinary and cross-cultural concert programmes — such as The Galileo Project, House of Dreams, and J.S. Bach: Circle of Creation — were created by double bassist Alison Mackay and have opened doors around the world. Tafelmusik has taken The Galileo Project on the road to Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Beijing Music Festival, Kuala Lumpur, the United States, and Western Canada. The orchestra returned to Australia and New Zealand in 2015 with House of Dreams, which has also travelled to Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles as part of an eight-city US Tour. In March of 2016, Tafelmusik will take House of Dreams to Western Canada, and J.S. Bach: The Circle of Creation will be seen in China, Korea, and the United States during the 2016/2017 season. In May, 2016, Tafelmusik premieres its latest multimedia creation, Tales of Two Cities: The Leipzig-Damascus Coffee House.
The nominating committee also cited the success of the Tafelmusik Media label and acknowledged Tafelmusik’s creative marketing of the label’s output to new audiences, as well as the wide range of audience engagement opportunities, including pre- and post-concert talks, master classes, Baroque and Beer events, Sing-Along Messiah workshops, and community outreach to libraries.
This week the orchestra will record Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in a series of sold out concerts at Toronto’s Koerner Hall, thereby completing its cycle of complete Beethoven symphonies on period instruments — the first period orchestra in North America to do so.
