April 24 at COC Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre
April 30 at Spadina TTC Station
Toronto, April 5, 2018 … Looking for an antidote to lunchtime letdown or the dreaded rush hour commute on public transit? Four members of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra will perform FREE daytime concerts in two different venues later this month: April 24 at 12 PM at the Canadian Opera Company’s Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, and April 30 at 4 PM at the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) Spadina Station.
The music of Mozart, Vanhal, and Boccherini will add a touch of the sublime to the daily routine of hundreds of people. Performed live on period instruments by John Abberger, oboe; Cristina Zacharias, violin; Patrick G. Jordan, viola, and Margaret Gay, cello, this short program of classical music follows three composers to their adopted cities where their creativity flourished.
“At Tafelmusik we believe that our music has the potential to speak to so many people and enrich so many lives. We also know that not everyone will be able to, or feel comfortable, attending a traditional concert,” says Managing Director William Norris. “Getting out of the concert hall and playing in new venues is so important in reaching new listeners, and it is vital we take our music to people and not always expect them to come to us. We look forward to bringing a little magic to people’s days with these free performances.”
In order to reach as wide an audience as possible, Tafelmusik performs a range of concerts tailored for different types of repertoire and experiences in ten venues across the GTA. In addition to mainstage concerts at Jeanne Lamon Hall, Koerner Hall, Massey Hall, and George Weston Recital Hall, Tafelmusik hosts Haus Musik events at Longboat Hall (The Great Hall), the Close Encounters chamber music series at Temerty Theatre and Heliconian Hall, and free Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute concerts in June at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music’s Walter Hall, Grace Church on-the-Hill, and Jeanne Lamon Hall.
Tafelmusik’s performance at the COC’s Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre last year drew the Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre’s largest audience for the 2016/17 season.
Admission to the April 24 concert is on a first-come, first-served basis and seating is limited. Audience members are encouraged to join the line-up early to avoid disappointment.
Led by Music Director Elisa Citterio, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir is one of the world’s leading period ensembles and Canada’s most-toured orchestra. Tafelmusik engages Toronto audiences with an annual season of more than 80 concerts in diverse venues across the city, as well as national and international audiences through an extensive schedule of tours and critically acclaimed recordings. The Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, under the direction of Ivars Taurins, was formed in 1981 to complement the Orchestra. Tafelmusik also seeks to transport audiences to the baroque and classical periods through adventurous cross-cultural collaborations, on stage with Toronto's Opera Atelier, and underground at its Haus Musik series. The orchestra’s musicians share their knowledge and experience through artist training initiatives such as the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer and Winter Institutes. Tafelmusik's catalogue of award-winning recordings on the SONY, CBC Records, Analekta, and Tafelmusik Media labels have garnered nine JUNO Awards and numerous other recording prizes. Jeanne Lamon continues her association with Tafelmusik as Music Director Emerita.
