Tafelmusik Triumphs Down Under with House of Dreams

Tafelmusik Triumphs Down Under with House of Dreams
Near-miraculously linked in thought and intention, the players of Tafelmusik sound as if born to the job. In purely musical terms, the Toronto-based players are incomparable.” – The West Australian
Toronto (Canada), March 11, 2015 … Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra’s triumphant three-week House of Dreams tour of Australia and New Zealand has just wrapped up, garnering rave reviews and audience ovations. From February 19 to March 6, Canada’s most active touring orchestra performed its international co-production to enthusiastic, sold-out houses in eight Australian cities including Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, and Brisbane, as well as Auckland, New Zealand. House of Dreams was also seen across the United States in 2013 during an eight-city tour which included performances in New York and at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. More information about the Australia and New Zealand 2015 tour, including photos and interviews, is available at Tafelmusik’s website
House of Dreams was conceived, scripted and programmed by Tafelmusik double-bassist Alison Mackay, and takes the audience to five European houses where baroque music and art intersect. Tafelmusik musicians perform the entire House of Dreams programme — which includes the music of Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Purcell, and Marais — from memory against a backdrop of stunning images and paintings by Vermeer, Canaletto, and Watteau, while narrator Blair Williams weaves together the threads connecting each of the houses. Stage direction for House of Dreams is by Marshall Pynkoski, co-artistic director of Opera Atelier.
Tafelmusik’s next multi-media creation by Mackay is J.S. Bach: The Circle of Creation, which will have its premiere performances at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre, Jeanne Lamon Hall, May 6 to 10, and May 12 at George Weston Recital Hall.
Below are several excerpts from Australian reviews of House of Dreams performances over the past three weeks:
It's the musicianship of Tafelmusik that really makes the program soar … and the verve with which they deliver it … They move freely around the stage as the piece demands, and this alone gives their playing a wonderful energy that's sorely lacking in most symphony orchestras.” (The Sydney Morning Herald)
"The musicianship of Tafelmusik is exquisite without question, and all essential musical devices such as intonation, articulation, tone, dynamics, texture and technique are masterfully handled." (The Clothesline)
They bring to everything they play an elegance, insight and nobility of tone and made this … concert an event to cherish. I cannot readily recall experiencing so satisfying a presentation in a long time.” (The West Australian)
Tafelmusik is an ensemble exceptional for its collegiate musicianship. There is no formal conductor visible – it is more a fellowship of musicians who maintain discipline through long hours of rehearsing together to preserve the seamless fabric of the performance.” (Canberra Times)
The musicianship was impeccable, the quality only too apparent when individual members could be heard just feet away, processing up the aisle … Applause was spontaneous and vociferous; and, for the most substantial piece of the evening, fully deserved.” (The New Zealand Herald)
