"It's hard to imagine music making of greater exuberance, transcendence and sheer revelatory power …" — Globe & Mail

January 20, 2016 … Today Tafelmusik launches its first-ever crowdfunding campaign, Fund the 9th, in support of the live recording of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony — the final work in its cycle of the complete Beethoven symphonies. Contributors to this $15,000, 54-day initiative will help Tafelmusik make history as it becomes the first North American orchestra to have recorded all nine Beethoven symphonies on period instruments. Tafelmusik’s recording of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony will be released on the Tafelmusik Media label in the fall of 2016, with worldwide distribution by Naxos.

The Beethoven 9th recording will take place during a series of public performances at Toronto’s Koerner Hall from February 4 through 7, 2016, with conductor Bruno Weil leading the combined forces of the orchestra, choir, and guest soloists Sigrid Plundrich, soprano; Mary-Ellen Nesi, mezzo-soprano; Colin Balzer, tenor; and Simon Tischler, bass-baritone. Tafelmusik’s previous Beethoven performances over the past two decades have garnered glowing international acclaim: “Weil and his players convince us that Beethoven can sound as radical in the 21st century as he must have done in the 19th.” (Gramophone)
Beethoven’s 9th is one of the pinnacles of the symphonic repertoire and marks the first time that the human voice was woven into the texture of a symphonic score. The 9th is a celebration of the human spirit, culminating with the exhilarating “Ode to Joy” — a melody that has been widely adopted around the world, from becoming the official anthem of the European Union to marking the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
In a video launching Tafelmusik’s Fund the 9th campaign, Chief Artistic Advisor Jeanne Lamon said, “Many of the world’s great orchestras have recorded Beethoven’s complete symphonies, but very few period orchestras have reached that summit. Soon Tafelmusik will be the first North American period orchestra to have recorded all nine Beethoven symphonies, and we are thrilled to be celebrating a major milestone 18 years in the making! Producing a CD takes an army of talented people, especially when tackling ambitious repertoire like Beethoven’s 9th. This includes musicians, choir members, recording engineers, and graphic designers, just to name a few. The public’s contribution to Fund the 9th will help ensure this project is the best it can possibly be.”
The range of rewards for Fund the 9th supporters, depending of the level of contribution, includes a copy of the finished recording, an invitation to the CD launch, acknowledgement in the CD booklet, assorted Tafelmusik swag, and an exclusive Beethoven bobblehead doll.
Since 1998 Tafelmusik has recorded eight of the Beethoven symphonies on the Tafelmusik Media, Analekta, and Sony Classical labels, including a two-CD set featuring Symphonies 1 to 4, the JUNO Award-winning Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6, and the JUNO Award-nominated Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8 CD and DVD.
