Toronto (Canada), May 20, 2015 … Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir wraps up the 2014/15 season with a joyous and uplifting choral programme directed by Ivars Taurins
featuring Vivaldi’s Gloria and the Coronation Anthems
by Handel. Concerts take place May 27 to 31 at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre, Jeanne Lamon Hall. Select Tafelmusik musicians will participate in an Audience Talkback
session for all audience members immediately following the May 27 concert. For detailed programme notes about the repertoire, visit Tafelmusik’s concert page
Handel’s dazzling Coronation Anthems were composed for the crowning of King George II in 1727 and include The King shall rejoice, My heart is inditing, Let thy hand be strengthened, and Zadok the Priest, which has been sung at every coronation since Handel's time. The frenzy around the royal family’s activities and the persistence of the “royal watchers” is not exclusively a modern-day phenomenon: so intense was the curiosity about the music for the coronation of King George that the time and date of the rehearsal was kept secret “lest the Crowd of People should be an Obstruction to the Performers.” Tafelmusik last performed the Coronation Anthems in 1997.
The universally appealing Gloria is Vivaldi’s best-known choral work and is scored for choir, soloists, trumpet, oboe, strings, and continuo. Solos will be sung by members of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir: Agnes Zsivogics and Michele DeBoer, sopranos, and Christina Stelmacovich, mezzo-soprano.
The Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, specializing in baroque and classical performance practice, was formed in 1981 to complement the orchestra. Under the direction of Ivars Taurins, the choir was awarded the Healey Willan Prize in 1991 and has been described as “the best period-performance choir anywhere in the world” (The Globe & Mail).
“I’m prepared to nominate the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir for a group Order of Canada ... They are a consummate and perfectly balanced ensemble, so complete in their execution, whose joy and beauty in performance often brought me and my companion … to tears.” (The Globe & Mail, 2014)
