Toronto, May 23, 2017 … A grand total of 100 musicians from around the world will perform in one or more of five FREE concerts in three different venues across the city of Toronto as part of the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Festival, May 30 to June 11, 2017. These concerts are presented in conjunction with the 16th annual Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute (TBSI), a top-tier training program led by some of the world's finest musicians in the field of baroque performance practice. The concerts include performances by Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir, TBSI faculty including Jeanne Lamon and Ivars Taurins, and participants.

Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Instituteis a challenging and exhilarating experience that sees 100 pre-professional and professional musicians from some 15 different countries gather in Toronto each year. The comprehensive training program includes orchestra and choir rehearsals, masterclasses, opera scene study for singers, chamber ensembles, private lessons, lectures and workshops, classes in baroque dance, and concerts by participants and faculty. Each year TBSI is held at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, where Tafelmusik is the baroque orchestra-in-residence.

Over the past 15 years, TBSI has not only grown in size and reputation, but has also become increasingly international. This year’s Institute will welcome musicians from across Canada and the United States, as well as from Australia, Belgium, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, England, France, Hong Kong, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, and Venezuela.

Tafelmusik awards more than $30,000 in bursaries annually to TBSI students who would not otherwise be able to afford the tuition. These bursaries are possible through the substantial support of many individual and foundation donors. The TBSI program itself has been has been generously supported by BMO for the past 7 years.

“TBSI is unique among summer workshops in that the faculty is drawn from an orchestra and choir, allowing us to share not only our individual expertise with the participants, but also our rich communal experience as one of the world’s leading period-performance ensembles,” says TBSI Artistic Coordinator Charlotte Nediger.
