A work of unmistakable genius, this deeply moving oratorio tells the story of Jesus’ birth, inviting you on an intimate journey of tenderness and elation.
Bach’s Christmas Oratorio bears the unmistakable hallmark of the composer’s genius. The story of Jesus’ birth unfolds in a sequence of energetic choruses, richly harmonized chorales, and poetic arias, while the tenor Evangelist provides a continuous narrative arc. An array of orchestral colours is punctuated by jubilant trumpets and timpani.
Originally the six cantatas forming the oratorio were presented individually at services celebrating the feast days of Christmas. Tafelmusik performs five parts from this essential masterpiece that balances sparkling exuberance with tenderness and simplicity, perfectly capturing the wonder of the nativity story.
