Tafelmusik Winter Institute

The Birth of the Symphony

January 5–11, 2020
A message from Elisa Citterio, Music Director
I am delighted to announce our eighth annual Tafelmusik Winter Institute, to be held in Toronto January 5–11, 2020. We will once again welcome a select group of period players to join us for an intensive week of specialized orchestral study.

For the first time we will step beyond the boundaries of baroque orchestral music and explore the early years of the classical orchestra. The Institute is open to experienced players of period string instruments, oboe, bassoon, horn, and harpsichord.

The week will include orchestra rehearsals, sectionals, seminars, masterclasses, informal reading sessions, and a final public concert. Leadership of sections will be shared amongst the players.

Joining us as a special guest is Vanni Moretto, Italian bassist and composer who has a passion and wealth of knowledge of early symphonic music, and will guide us in our choice of repertoire and studies. He will work alongside members of Tafelmusik: myself (Music Director and violinist Elisa Citterio), violinist Cristina Zacharias, violist Brandon Chui, bassist Pippa Macmillan, oboist John Abberger, bassoonist Dominic Teresi, hornist Derek Conrod, and harpsichordist Charlotte Nediger.

Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful sponsors, we are delighted to be able to offer this program at a greatly reduced fee of $300.

Details of the Tafelmusik Winter Institute are included on the following pages. Applications will open July 1, 2019, and the application deadline is October 15, 2019. If you are an experienced period player, please consider applying.
