From St. John’s, Newfoundland, bass-baritone Alex Halliday recently completed his MMus in Opera Performance at the University of Toronto. Primary mentors there included Wendy Nielsen, Sandra Horst and Michael Albano. His roles included Masetto in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Frank Erickson in George Gershwin’s Of Thee I Sing, Carl Olsen in Kurt Weill’s Street Scene, Detective Brinks in Michael Albano’s Who Killed Adriana?, and Nardo in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera.
Alex completed his BMus at the Memorial University of Newfoundland, where primary mentors included Dr. Caroline Schiller and Eldon Murray. He was a member of the Opera Roadshow for three years, concluding with his role as the Fisherman in Dean Burry’s La Nez de la Sorcière.
In the summer of 2019, Alex performed the role of Colline in Puccini’s La Bohème with Dr. Darryl Edward’s COSÌ Connection, and headed to the BANFF Centre to perform the role of Father in Paola Prestini and Royce Vavrek’s Silent Light.
Alex returns to UofT this season to complete a one-year Artist Diploma in Opera, and joins the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir as a core member.
