The Instrumental Programme at TBSI is designed to offer experienced players an opportunity for in-depth study of their instruments in a variety of solo, chamber and orchestral settings. The programme also offers players new to period instruments an introduction to the instruments, their technique and the repertoire. Masterclasses, rehearsals and lessons are supported by lectures and workshops on a range of topics. The various components of the Instrumental Programme are outlined below.
Instrumentalists are generally not required to audition: eligibility is determined by the applicant's education and experience as outlined in the applicant's CV. If the CV does not provide adequate information, the applicant may be asked to play an audition or submit a recording.
Instruments offered are flute, oboe, bassoon, violin, viola, viola d'amore*, cello, bass, harpsichord and lute/guitar. The availability of specific instrumental programmes is subject to sufficient enrolment.
Note that a limited number of baroque flutes, oboes and bassoons are available for use by participants. String players new to period instruments are generally expected to use their modern instruments, re-tuned to a’=415 hz and strung with gut, though a limited number of period instruments are available for loan. We are able to loan baroque bows, and we stock gut strings for purchase. Bass players may borrow a set of gut strings for the duration of the Institute.
*Participants who choose to study viola d’amore are expected to play violin or viola in orchestra and to supplement their study of viola d'amore with participation in violin or viola masterclasses. A limited number of violas d'amore are available to players interested in undertaking study of this instrument for the first time at TBSI.

Masterclasses
Faculty members lead daily masterclasses on solo repertoire and technique. Repertoire guidelines for each class will be sent to participants prior to the Institute.
Orchestra
Jeanne Lamon directs the instrumental participants in daily orchestra rehearsals, with additional sectional coaching by members of the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.
All TBSI instrumentalists play in one of two chamber-sized orchestras – these orchestras will perform at a public concert on Wednesday, June 13.
All instrumentalists also play in the full orchestra, which joins forces with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra for the Grand Finale on Saturday, June 16.

Chamber Ensembles
Instrumentalists participate in instrumental chamber ensembles, coached by members of the faculty. They also participate in mixed vocal/instrumental ensembles to explore the wealth of baroque repertoire for solo voice with instruments. All chamber ensembles will have the opportunity to perform for other participants, faculty, friends and family at an informal in-house concert on Thursday, June 14.
Private Lessons
One private lesson is included in tuition. Extra lessons can be arranged for an additional fee.
Baroque Dance
Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg, Co-Artistic Director of Opera Atelier, will lead classes in baroque dance for musicians. All participants are encouraged to join in.
Continuo Classes
Charlotte Nediger, Olivier Fortin, Lucas Harris and Borys Medicky lead daily continuo classes for keyboard players and lutenists/guitarists. Classes will include work on issues of style, technique and sound production in chamber, orchestral and vocal continuo repertoire on harpsichord, organ and lute/guitar. Classes are divided according to the participants’ level of experience, so that we can accommodate both those who are new to continuo playing and those who have a range of experience.
Concerts
Faculty Concerts
Participants will attend a concert by the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and Chamber Choir, with soloists Ann Monoyios and Peter Harvey, on Monday, June 4, as well as a Faculty Chamber Recital on Saturday, June 9.
Participant Performances
There will be a public concert by the TBSI Orchestras and Choirs on Wednesday, June 13.
Chamber ensembles will have the opportunity to perform for other participants, faculty, friends and family at an informal in-house concert on Thursday, June 14.
Opera workshop scenes will be showcased for other participants and faculty at the end of the Institute (date and time tba).
Grand Finale Concert
The Institute ends with a public concert by the combined forces of the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, TBSI Orchestra and TBSI Choir. This concert is held in the resplendent acoustics of Grace Church on-the-Hill on the final evening of the Institute, Saturday, June 16.
Annual Bach Bash
All participants are invited to join in a spirited reading of one of Bach’s large-scale choral works, directed by Ivars Taurins and assisted by Ann Monoyios and Peter Harvey. Vocalists take turns singing the arias, and join to sing the choruses. Past ‘bashes’ have featured the St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion and B-Minor Mass.
Lectures
Lectures will be offered by faculty members and guests on various aspects of baroque music, performance practice, theatre and art.
Instrument Demonstration and Workshops
These will include displays and demonstrations by bowmakers and instrument makers as well as classes in harpsichord tuning and maintenance.
Social Events
All work and no play is good for neither body nor soul, so we will plan a few pub gatherings, as well as the annual TBSI Picnic, traditionally held on the Toronto Islands.
Music Sales
On concert days, Early Music Imports will be on site selling facsimiles and reputable editions of baroque music, as well as tuning forks in various pitches.
Library
The TBSI Library includes a range of books and articles on baroque repertoire, performance practice, instruments and iconography, as well as a selection of chamber music. In addition, the Faculty of Music Library has an extensive collection of scores and research material.
