Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute 2012
Programme for Conductors & Directors
The Programme for Conductors and Directors has been designed for professional conductors or advanced students interested in expanding their knowledge and experience of baroque performance practice and repertoire. It is not a "hands-on" conducting course – there will be no opportunities to conduct at the Institute, nor any classes devoted to conducting technique. Each day there will be a class specific to the Programme for Conductors and Directors. In addition, participants are encouraged to audit vocal and instrumental masterclasses, sit in on orchestra, choir and chamber ensemble rehearsals, and to attend opera workshops, lectures, demonstrations and concerts, as outlined below. Faculty members will be available throughout the Institute to answer questions specific to their expertise, and to undertake discussions on matters of interest.
Because a significant portion of the programme for conductors/directors is self directed, we are able to offer the programme at a reduced fee. See Institute Rates for details.
Instrumentals and vocalists wishing to combine the Instrumental/Vocal Programme with the Programme for Conductors are welcome to do so. Following the morning class for conductors, they will attend classes and rehearsals according to their instrument/voice.

Classes for Conductors & Directors
Morning classes for conductors and directors will be led by Ivars Taurins and Jeanne Lamon. Among the topics that will be addressed are performance practice, repertoire, interpretation, ornamentation, editions, bowing and articulation for instrumentalists, period vs. modern instruments, phrasing and shaping for singers, etc. There will be lots of opportunity for discussion, and participants are encouraged to raise issues of particular interest.
There will also be classes with Tafelmusik librarian, Charlotte Nediger, on sources and editions. Additional classes will be led by other members of the faculty as well as members of the Tafelmusik administration, including sessions on artistic administration, government and private sector support of performing organizations, etc., according to participants’ interests.
Orchestra and choir rehearsals
Conductors/Directors are encouraged to sit in on rehearsals of the TBSI Orchestras and Choirs, led by Jeanne Lamon, Ivars Taurins and Peter Harvey. Scores will be provided for all works being rehearsed. Click here to see a list of TBSI Orchestra and Choir repertoire from previous institutes [repertoire for TBSI 2012 tba].
Chamber ensembles
Members of the faculty coach small vocal ensembles, instrumental ensembles and mixed vocal/instrumental ensembles. Click here to see a list of repertoire from previous institutes [repertoire for TBSI 2012 tba].
Baroque Opera
Marshall Pynkoski, Co-Artistic Director of Opera Atelier, will workshop scenes from baroque operas, focusing on gesture and deportment and their relation to music and text in the 17th and 18th centuries. Operas selected for workshops in previous institutes have included Blow's Venus & Adonis, Purcell's Dido & Aeneas, Handel's Acis & Galatea, and scenes from Purcell semi-operas [opera repertoire for 2012 tba]. Scores for the opera scenes will be distributed to the conductors. Marshall will also give an introductory lecture on baroque theatre and opera.
Baroque Dance
Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg, Co-Artistic Director of Opera Atelier, will lead classes in baroque dance for musicians. All participants are encouraged to join in.
Continuo classes
Charlotte Nediger, Lucas Harris, Olivier Fortin and Borys Medicky lead daily continuo classes for keyboard players and lutenists/guitarists. Classes will include work on issues of style, technique and sound production in chamber, orchestral and vocal continuo repertoire on harpsichord, organ and lute/guitar. Conductors are encouraged to attend the series of continuo classes devoted to recitative.

Saturday, June 9.
Participant Performances
There will be a public concert by the TBSI Orchestras and Choirs on Wednesday, June 13.

Opera workshop scenes will be showcased for other participants and faculty at the end of the Institute (date and time tba).
Grand Finale Concert
The Institute ends with a public concert by the combined forces of the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, TBSI Orchestra and TBSI Choir. This concert is held in the resplendent acoustics of Grace Church on-the-Hill on the final evening of the Institute, Saturday, June 16.
Annual Bach Bash
All participants are invited to join in a spirited reading of one of Bach’s large-scale choral works, directed by Ivars Taurins and assisted by Ann Monoyios and Peter Harvey. Vocalists take turns singing the arias, and join to sing the choruses. Past ‘bashes’ have featured the St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion and B-Minor Mass.
Lectures
Lectures will be offered by faculty members and guests on various aspects of baroque music, performance practice, theatre and art.
Instrument Demonstration and Workshops
These will include displays and demonstrations by bowmakers and instrument makers as well as classes in harpsichord tuning and maintenance.
Social Events
All work and no play is good for neither body nor soul, so we will plan a few pub gatherings, as well as the annual TBSI Picnic, traditionally held on the Toronto Islands.
Music Sales
On concert days, Early Music Imports will be on site selling facsimiles and reputable editions of baroque music, as well as tuning forks in various pitches.
Library
The TBSI Library includes a range of books and articles on baroque repertoire, performance practice, instruments and iconography, as well as a selection of chamber music. In addition, the Faculty of Music Library has an extensive collection of scores and research material. Conductors are also welcome to explore the Tafelmusik library, which has a fairly comprehensive selection of performing material for baroque and classical orchestral and choral works, including many of our own editions.
