The Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute enjoys an ongoing partnership with the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique, a European training orchestra specializing in classical and romantic repertoire on period instruments. To complement the baroque training offered by TBSI, two TBSI participants will be offered scholarships to attend the JOA orchestral training programme from July 5 – 18, 2008 at the Abbaye aux Dames in Saintes, France. The repertoire for this year's JOA programme is as follows:
July 5 – 11
Directed by Philippe Herreweghe
| Haydn | Symphony no. 104 in D Minor “London” | |
| Mozart | Concerto for piano in A Major, K.488 |
Concerts in Arvert (July 10) and Saintes (July 11).
July 12 - 18
Directed by Bernard Labadie
| Mozart | Symphony no. 31 in D Major “Paris” | |
| Kraus | Symphony in C Minor, VB.148 “Funeral” | |
| Beethoven | Symphony no. 1 in C Major, op. 21 |
Concerts in Poitiers (July 16) and Saintes (July 17).
Teachers include Brian Dean (violin), Catherine Puig (viola), tba (cello), Axel Bouchaux (double bass), Marc Vallon (bassoon), Daniele Latini (clarinet)
This year the JOA/TBSI exchange programme is open to two violinists or violists attending the 2008 Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute. Both TBSI and JOA are open to players of modern instruments as well as to players experienced on period instruments. Tafelmusik can supply a limited number of baroque bows to participants in the TBSI programme, and JOA will rent classical bows to participants in the summer orchestral programme.
The JOA exchange scholarship offers free tuition for the JOA July orchestral sessions as well as room and board. Successful applicants are responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel costs.
Interested applicants for the exchange are required to submit an audition CD/tape. The audition CD/tape should include one movement from a concerto or sonata from the classical period, and a selection of orchestral excerpts, as follows:
| VIOLIN | ||
|---|---|---|
| Mozart | Symphony no. 39, K.543 | |
| Movement II – bb. 1- 60 | ||
| Movement IV – bb. 1 – 52 | ||
| Beethoven | Symphony no. 4 | |
| Movement II – bb. 1 – 26 | ||
| Movement IV – bb. 1 – 37 |
| VIOLA | ||
|---|---|---|
| Beethoven | Symphony no. 5 | |
| Movement II – bb.1 – 10 | ||
| Movement IV – bb.239 – 279 | ||
| Beethoven | Symphony no. 7 | |
| Movement I (Vivace) – bb.222 – 285 | ||
| Movement II – bb.1 – 50 & bb.191 – 221 | ||
| Movement III – bb.1 – 24 & bb.83 – 145 |
Note: because the classical viola concerto/sonata repertoire is limited, a solo baroque excerpt can be substituted (e.g. 2 movements of a solo Bach suite, or a movement of a Bach gamba sonata).
The audition can be done on a period or modern instrument and bow. Note that no audition CD/tape is required for the TBSI portion of the programme.
The deadline for submission of the JOA audition CD/tape is May 15, 2008. Results will be announced by May 22. Late applications for TBSI will be considered as space allows.
