The Galileo Project

Explore the fusion of arts, science and culture in the 17th and 18th centuries in this imaginative concert commemorating Galileo’s first public demonstration of the telescope. Tafelmusik musicians perform the music by memory to a backdrop of high-definition images from the Hubble telescope and Canadian astronomers. Featuring poetic narration, choreography, and music by Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Bach, Lully and Handel.

Watch an excerpt of this production:

The show will include some special additions to reflect the fact that the tour takes place in the southern hemisphere. The following are images taken by Alan Dyer of the southern sky that will be projected on stage throughout the show.

In its performances around the  world, Tafelmusik's Galileo Project has been enriched by the work of many scholars and advisors.  We are honoured that  Dr. Ray Norris, astrophysicist at CSIRO Australia Telescope National Facility, and Director of the Aboriginal Astronomy Project at Macquarie University in Sydney has given us his kind advice about elements of Aboriginal astronomy which might be suitable for inclusion in our performances in Australia.

The book Emu Dreaming by Ray Norris and Cilla Norris is a seminal work in the study of this subject and we are deeply grateful for the permission to use a reading from the book in the narration of our concert. For more information about Emu Dreaming please click here.
