The final day of the tour – 7 days and 12 concerts later, we’re on the bus heading home. On the plate today were two school shows in Windsor, playing to 1,100 schoolchildren:
250 children from grades 6-8 at the first show, and no fewer than 850 children from Junior Kindergarten to grade 5 at the second. Seated on the floor in the school gymnasium, remarkably the 850 younger children occupied the same amount of space as the 250 older ones. And even more remarkably, both groups of children were very quiet and attentive – actively watching and listening, and keen to respond to our questions and ask questions of their own. One tends to think of today’s youth, surrounded by technology, as having short attention spans and requiring constant stimulation of a sort not necessarily provided by acoustic music. But on this tour it was clear that children are as curious as ever, and that live classical music can capture their imaginations. It’s great to have the opportunity to share our passion with them.
