Toronto, September 29, 2017 … Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra is deeply honoured to be performing in Ottawa at the October 2 investiture of Julie Payette to the office of Governor General of Canada. A quartet of members from Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra — Elisa Citterio, new Music Director and violin; Patricia Ahern, violin; Patrick G. Jordan, viola; and Margaret Gay, cello — will play the Allegro movement from Mozart’s Divertimento in D Major, K. 136.

Tafelmusik will perform immediately following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s address, and just prior to Mme Payette’s first speech as Canada’s 29th Governor General. The swearing-in ceremony takes place on Parliament Hill in the Senate Chamber beginning at 10 AM EST, and will be televised nationally on CBC.

An avowed music lover and talented singer, Governor General Designate Julie Payette was also a member of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir from 1989 to 1992, which she describes as “one of my richest experiences as a musician,” (L’Actualité, translated from French). As the first Canadian astronaut to board the International Space Station, she spent more than 600 hours in space aboard the shuttle Discovery in 1999 and Endeavour in 2009. Mme Payette famously brought Tafelmusik recordings with her — specifically Handel’s Messiah, and the Concerto for Oboe in D Minor by Alessandro Marcello — on the 1999 space mission.

Tafelmusik Music Director Elisa Citterio said, “I'm truly honoured to be representing Tafelmusik at the investiture of Mme Julie Payette as the new Governor General. As Canada's most toured orchestra, it seems fitting that Tafelmusik be among those taking part in this important moment in the country's history. Mme Payette's lovely gesture of bringing Tafelmusik recordings with her on the 1999 space mission demonstrates that the universal language of music indeed transcends all boundaries.”

Ivars Taurins, Director of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir since its founding in 1981, said “When University of Toronto student Julie Payette joined the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir in 1989, I met someone who showed an intense passion for music and singing, combined with a quicksilver intellect and a fierce dedication to achieving perfection. These qualities were tempered by a warm charm, direct honesty, and a strong sense of humanity. It is precisely because of these qualities that I believe Mme Payette will be an extraordinary Governor General, and it is with a sense of immense pride that I congratulate her on her auspicious appointment.”
