Henry Purcell (1659-1695) - Ayres for the Theatre  TMK1010CD
Dioclesian | The Fairy Queen | King Arthur | The Indian Queen

Although Henry Purcell lived only 36 years, he was one of the finest and most original composers of his day.  His duties were divided between the royal court and the London theatres.  Purcell penned music for 40 plays, much of which was published one year after his death in a set entitled A Collection of Ayres, Compos'd for the Theatre, and upon Other Occasions.  The four suites recorded here are taken from Purcell's four semi-operas.

"Tafelmusik are surely one of the best-equipped baroque orchestras in the world to perform this music." - Gramophone
