Crowdfunding Campaign for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony Recording Exceeds Goal

March 16, 2016 … Tafelmusik is thrilled to announce that its first-ever crowdfunding campaign, Fund the 9th, has exceeded its initial goal of $15,000, thanks to more than 120 individual backers. Fund the 9th was launched on January 20, 2016, in support of the live recording of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony — the final work in Tafelmusik’s cycle of the complete Beethoven symphonies. 122 supporters contributed a total of $16,607 over the course of the 54-day campaign, which wrapped up on March 13 and helped Tafelmusik make history as the first North American orchestra to have recorded all nine Beethoven symphonies on period instruments. Tafelmusik’s recording of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony will be released on the Tafelmusik Media label in the fall of 2016, with worldwide distribution by Naxos.

Chief Artistic Advisor Jeanne Lamon said, “Last month Tafelmusik became the first North American period orchestra to have recorded all nine Beethoven symphonies, and we are delighted to be celebrating a major milestone 18 years in the making! The public’s contribution to Fund the 9th has helped ensure this project is the best it can possibly be, and we are very grateful for the support.”

The Beethoven 9th recording took place February 4 through 7, 2016, during a series of sold-out, critically acclaimed public performances at Toronto’s Koerner Hall, with conductor Bruno Weil leading the combined forces of the orchestra, choir, and guest soloists Sigrid Plundrich, soprano; Mary-Ellen Nesi, mezzo-soprano; Colin Balzer, tenor; and Simon Tischler, bass-baritone.

"Every so often, you come across a performance that renders you powerless to resist, that sweeps you away with it, that reminds you of why you fell in love with music in the first place" declared the Globe & Mail in a review of the performance.

Campaign backers will be treated to a range of rewards, depending of the level of contribution, including a copy of the finished recording, an invitation to the CD launch, acknowledgement in the CD booklet, assorted Tafelmusik swag, and an exclusive Beethoven bobblehead doll. 22 backers who opted for the Double Dare will vote on the challenge of their choice, to be undertaken by Tafelmusik staff and captured on video: a pie-in-the-face competition, a mechanical bull challenge, a Sumo suit wrestling challenge, or an advanced baroque dance lesson with Opera Atelier’s Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg.

Since 1998 Tafelmusik has recorded eight of the Beethoven symphonies on the Tafelmusik Media, Analekta, and Sony Classical labels, including a two-CD set featuring Symphonies 1 to 4, the JUNO Award-winning Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6, and the JUNO Award-nominated Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8 CD and DVD.
