Described by Gramophone magazine as “one of the world’s top baroque orchestras,” Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra was founded in 1979 and is led by Music Director and violinist Jeanne Lamon. Tafelmusik performs over 50 concerts a year at home in Toronto, tours extensively around the world, has released 75 CDs and has received nine Juno Awards. In 2005, Tafelmusik received a Grammy Award nomination. Tafelmusik is the Baroque Orchestra-in-Residence at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. The Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, specializing in baroque performance practice and vocal technique, was formed in 1981 to complement the Orchestra and is led by Ivars Taurins.
“Tafelmusik” is a German word that means “table music” or “music for the feast.” It was a common title for collections of music in the baroque period, and we adopted it as our name in 1979.
Face the Musik is Tafelmusik’s affordable ticket programme for 18 to 30 year olds who want to see Canada’s Juno Award-winning, Grammy-nominated baroque orchestra and chamber choir, but might not be able to afford a regularly priced ticket.
