How to Listen to Music

The Listening Club

Thu Oct 5, 2017 at 7pm The Chapel, Trinity-St. Paul's Centre Map

Think you know everything about baroque music? Delve a little deeper into baroque music with this special series moderated by BBC Radio host and musicologist Dr. Hannah French, and Tafelmusik musician, Dominic Teresi, bassoon.

In this first listening club of the season, explore the ways we listen to music. How do you choose recordings, what should you be listening out for, and would you ever reach for a score? We’ll engage with some of the major works featured throughout the season to give you the chance to warm up your ears, have a richer experience of concert going, or perhaps experience your favourite moments in a new light.

What to listen to:

For this first recording, please choose any performance from wherever you usually listen to music - and make a note of who was performing (the ensemble or orchestra) and a couple of things that you enjoyed about it.

1. Bach Brandenburg Concerto no. 3

The remaining recordings are all Tafelmusik releases. Not compulsory, but try and note 3 things you really enjoyed about each recorded performance when listening.

2. Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3
3. Vivaldi "Winter" from The Four Seasons (Concerto No. 4 in F Minor, RV 297)
4. Handel Messiah, The Hallelujah Chorus
